How Speech Stuttering Affects The Emotions

In the aspect of language and speech development, there are many different disorders that people can develop or inherit. With speech being the most important means of communicating with friends and strangers alike and being an important part of everyday life, this means that the millions of people who struggle with these disorders have a much harder time of it than those who don't.

Out of all the different speech disorders, speech stuttering is one of those that is not yet completely understood. It is clear that genetics plays a role, as well as neurophysiology, but research has yet to bring up a cure, or a medicine that can be very safe and effective in reducing or eliminating stuttering speech and improving verbal fluency.

There are some approved therapy programs that can make a tremendous improvement in a person's fluency. These require intervention from an experienced professional. First an evaluation is performed and then a therapy method is adopted and sessions began.

Speech stuttering brings a great deal of anxiety to the person with the stuttering problem. This may be a result or cause of the stuttering, and it works in a cycle. The issue of stuttering has been compared to an iceberg. What you can see atop the water represents the observable signs of stuttering: the repetition and blockages, as well as any physical movements that may be made by the stutterer.

However, underneath the water lies the much, much greater part of the iceberg. This, in terms of stuttering issues, represents the emotional ramifications and feelings and thoughts that go with stuttering. It is a far more significant part of the problem than the outwardly seen symptoms.

Usually for people who stutter they feel nervous and stressed in certain situations. While a stutterer may have no problem speaking to children or animals, or even to their self, when talking to peers or other adults, it becomes difficult to continue with fluent speech. Some situations or even people make the stuttering worse. Public speaking and talking on the telephone are two common problem areas.

For many who stutter, it is unfortunate that their confidence is being compromised because of their disorder. They may feel unsure and inadequate. They may avoid people or situations, some doing this in extreme ways and staying home much of the time. Their self image is skewed and they can project their own feelings on to others. This means that they may think that other people think they're stupid or slow, even if this is not true.

Whatever any good program for dealing with stuttering will take into account the feelings that are represented by the underwater portion of the iceberg that is stuttering. Letting the stutterer talk about and work through their feelings, as well as finding a way to deal with them can help them to find a great deal of improvement in their speech and especially in their self confidence.
